The place is called Crafted Tap House & Kitchen and it’s located in a former muffler shop. Talk about great adaptive reuse of a building!
This is the first restaurant for Rob Berger, a former software developer whose contribution to the world includes the technology to order food and drinks from your table via iPad or other tablet. Yep, those things confuse the daylights out of me, but it saves restaurant operators a ton of labor costs and it really works in some settings.
The food is good – I had a nice salad and Bruce had a burger – but we just really liked what Rob Berger had done in designing the restaurant. He had a local craftsperson build all of the seats and tables using repurposed rebar and big industrial-sized coils.
The 50 taps for beer are made from cam shafts and pistons; the trash cans are defused, gutted 700 pound WWII-era bombs. The hostess stand is part of a pontoon bridge that once crossed the Spokane River. The bathroom stalls are handcrafted from 3/8 inch hot blown steel; the sinks made from car parts.
Back to the menu – Entrees are named for those who excelled at their craft. For example, the “42” Hamburger, which Bruce had, is named for Jackie Robinson; Mama T’s chicken Parmesan is named for Mother Theresa; the best selling pork tacos named for Bono. The salad I had was “Audrey’s Adoration,” named for Audrey Hepburn.
Summer in Coeur d’Alene is just fabulous – no humidity, mild temps and perfect blue skies – so dining outside is indeed a treat. And dining at Crafted Tap House is a treat anytime of the year.
